6 Important Steps After a Motorcycle Accident

Home » Law Blog » 6 Important Steps After a Motorcycle Accident

When you are in a motorcycle accident it can be difficult to think straight immediately following the accident. You or others may have injuries that you are unaware of because of the adrenaline caused by the accident. Immediately following the accident it is important that you follow these steps.

Check Everyone Involved for Injuries

Everyone involved in the accident should be checked for injuries. Oftentimes the adrenaline from an accident can mask minor injuries and pains. It is important to check each individual to be sure they are not in need of urgent medical care. If anyone needs medical care, call 911 immediately

Call 911

If the accident does NOT involve any injury the drivers should remove the cars from the roadway at this time and can contact the police if necessary. Many insurance companies will require a police report for extensive damages and for damages that involve other vehicles. It is important to get the right personnel on the scene as quickly as possible to further assess injuries and determine how to proceed. If anyone needs urgent medical care, it is imperative that you let officials know as soon as possible/ An officer will be sent to your location to file a police report. This is an official document that proves any details about your accident. Be sure to provide accurate details.

Take Pictures and Gather Information

Details about the accident need to be gathered as soon as possible to ensure accuracy. Gather as many of the following as possible:

  • getting pictures of all vehicles involved
  • license plates and vehicle identification numbers (VIN) for all vehicles involved
  • Contact information of all drivers
  • Contact information for all witnesses
  • Insurance information for all vehicles involved
  • Name and badge number for the reporting officer
  • Police report number

Contact Your Insurance Agent

Call your insurance company as soon as you can following a motorcycle accident. They will request all of the information that you gathered so that they can begin processing your claim and ensure accuracy when working with the other insurance companies. Give your insurance company the facts only.

Remember, it is imperative that you do not admit fault to anyone including your insurance company. Wait to tell them of any injuries until after you have seen a medical professional. If there is any damage to your motorcycle, be sure to have it checked by a mechanic before reporting the damage to your insurance.

Seek Medical Attention

Even if you feel fine and do not see any injuries, it is imperative that you receive a medical evaluation. Many injuries, some serious, may not be immediately apparent after an accident. Motorcycle crashes can lead to many internal injuries because the motorcyclist has little protection other than clothing. A blunt force caused by an accident could cause anything from a concussion to serious internal bleeding.

Contact a Motorcycle Accident Attorney

There are many reasons why you may need to contact an attorney following your accident, below are a few common reasons

  • You have incurred any medical bills as a result of your accident
  • You have missed any work and/or cannot work
  • An insurance company denies your claims
  • Your costs exceed what your insurance will cover

If you are unsure about any of the above reasons, it is recommended that you contact a motorcycle accident attorney. It is recommended to do this as quickly as possible after an accident to ensure the maximum amount of compensation for your claim.
